Internal medicine is a discipline encompassing the study and practice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adolescents and adults of all ages. Intrinsic to this discipline are the application of scientific methods of problem solving, decision making and attitude of humane caring driven by professional behavior.
Since the practice of medicine is rapidly changing with increasing emphasis on prevention and cost-effective management of patients, internists are therefore required to play emerging roles in addition to mastering the necessary clinical skills. These emerging roles include:
i. Resource management
ii. Health information management
iii. Effective teaching
The programme shall prepare doctors for practice as internal medicine specialists (physicians) while taking cognizance of diverse career opportunities. It focuses on the development of clinical skills, research and professional competency and the acquisition of factual knowledge. The doctors will also be prepared to be able to advance their intellectual growth and acquire new skills and knowledge as demanded by the advances in medical practice.
