Despite the fact that Rwanda does not criminalize sexual orientation and the law guarantees freedom of association, LGBTI individuals and LGBTI organizations in Rwanda continue to face discrimination, inadequate protection, and lack of respect for their fundamental rights.
Men who have sex with men (MSM) and sex workers are at particularly high risk for contracting HIV/AIDS, and they struggle to access prevention and treatment services. With generous support from UNAIDS, Global Fund, PSF, NPA, GRET, GIZ and the Open Society Institute, HDI works to protect the health and human rights of key populations in Rwanda.
