About us
HDI (Health Development Initiative) -Rwanda is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Kigali and registered under Rwandan law. Our vision is to have a society in which everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the highest standard of health and well-being, regardless of social, cultural or economic status.
A dedicated group of Rwandan physicians founded HDI in 2005. The founders were born and raised in remote areas of Eastern and Central Africa, where preventable diseases claimed many lives, especially those of women and children. Dismayed by this situation, the founders were inspired to become health care professionals and improve the health of disadvantaged communities within and outside of the healthcare system.
Today, HDI brings together a team with vast experience in medicine, public health, and community development to bridge the gap between communities and the health care system. We believe that health outcomes can be improved through parallel development of community and the medical profession’s capacity to support prevention, care and treatment of disease and illness. Using a rights-based approach, HDI promotes sustainable, community-based interventions, such as disease prevention, health training, and capacity building at both the individual and institutional level
