Outpatient Cardiac Unit
Services available at The Outpatient Mater Cardiac Clinic include:
EchocardiographyThis is a non invasive test using ultrasound technology to produce an image from the sound waves that reflect from the tissue or organ being examined (heart). The test is useful in evaluating the structure and function of the heart and the valves.
Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG)A non invasive test in which electrodes are placed on the arms, legs and chest. Graphic tracing of the electrical activity of the heart is produced and can assist in detecting abnormalities in the rhythm and structure of the heart.
Holter MonitorThis is a 24, 48, or 72 hour continuous monitor of the patient ECG. A logbook is kept for the different activities and times at which they take place so that they can be better correlated with the ECG track.
Stress TestingThis is a test used to evaluate the hearts response to physical stress. Stress testing can be done with physical exercises on treadmill or can be done by administering medication to induce a stress response on the heart. This may be done in conjunction with echocardiography or other X-Ray examinations of the Heart.
