The project Umuravumba-Tetradenia riparia was established at INES-Ruhengeri in December 2014 by Dr. Jean-Olivier Zirimwabagabo and INES-Ruhengeri’s rector Fr. Dr. Fabien Hagenimana then conducted within biotechnology department headed by Mr. Aimable Nzanzurwimo and in collaboration with different national and international institutions.
The project Umuravumba is one INES-Ruhengeri’s projects aiming to explore the INES-Ruhengeri’s botanic garden.
During this project, different active principles and compounds will be isolated from one of the most popular medicinal plant in Rwanda; the Umuravumba. The active principles and compounds will be screened against different maladies where Umuravumba is believed to be active according to Rwandese traditional medicines.
