his is a four-year research programme to generate data required to inform policy on prevention and care of chronic diseases (CDs) in NW Tanzania and in SW Uganda. The specific aims are:

    1. To assess the current burden of CDs both at the population level and at the health services level;
    2.
Based on data collected, to identify interventions which would be required to assist health services in better coping with CDs;

    3. To evaluate the impact of the proposed intervention package through a randomised controlled trial;

    4. To use the new data emerging from this project to inform existing policies on the health services response to CDs.

This work will be performed in Tanzania as a collaborative project between health policy makers and health programme managers of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) of Tanzania with researchers from MITU. Identical activities will be done in Uganda involving the MoHSW of Uganda and the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS in Entebbe.
