Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) is a government research institute with a mandate to engage in health research pertaining to human infections and disease processes associated with or linked to viral aetiology and provides expert advice and communication. UVRI has several national and international reference and specialized laboratories.

To be a world-class centre of excellence in health research.
Mission:
To conduct scientific investigations on viral and other communicable diseases so as to contribute to knowledge, policy, practice and build capacity while promoting institutional sustainability.
Research Capacity and Excellence
UVRI is a national and international reference center for vector-borne viral infectious diseases. The reference laboratories are at the Division of Arbovirology Emerging and Re-Emerging Viral Infections.
In addition, UVRI has the following specialized research Units: Epidemiology; Immunisable Diseases Unit; Clinical Unit for Research and; Quality Assurance unit which does standard setting, Monitoring, evaluation and operational research.

Research ethics review and regulations
UVRI has a Research Ethics Committee (REC)/ Institutional Review Committee (IRC) which conforms to standards set by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), which is the regulatory body for all Research Ethics Committees in Uganda.
