About us
Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI) is an academic centre for evidence based health interventions. We initiate and conduct medical research to develop evidences for interventions and provide research training and necessary research logistics to collaborators and partners. We collaborate according to the four C’s of our institute which are conduct, contract, coordinate and consult. KCRI forms the third pillar of the Good Samaritan foundation next to health services and training.
For over four decades of increasing research activities, the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) has seen an unprecedented scale of infrastructure upgrading, the creation of a critical mass of qualified researchers and research administrators, and the establishment of mutually beneficial collaborations. This has resulted into establishment of Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI). KCRI is a well-positioned research facility. Click here for more information about the history.
KCRI is located in Moshi Kilimanjaro in the northern zone of Tanzania. The zone has diverse geophysical features, occupation, and human ethnicity that may contribute to disease characteristics. We have several field sites settled throughout this Northern Zone. KCRI is also well located within the region and African continent, midway along the Cairo (Egypt) - Capetown (South Africa) highway. This highway links the northern pole of the continent to the southern interface of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. KCRI is located at the foot of mountain Kilimanjaro, within a 30-minute drive from the Kilimanjaro International Airport, which has daily international flights connecting Europe.
Over the last forty years a significant number of staff has been trained abroad, this has allowed transfer of knowledge and technology but more than that, it has resulted into establishing joint research activities; these international collaborative activities have benefit to the institute in terms of experience and modern technology.
Research ethics review and regulations
Research has been conducted since several years in KCRI and before that in KCMC. Past research and the current portfolio of research activities at the Centre have provided evidence-based research findings, which have contributed to the body of knowledge on public health issues and health policy. Over the years the research activity at KCRI has produced competent research professionals able to lead on the development, planning and implementation of important clinical trials.
KCRI conducts several types of research on several health and disease topics that fall into three broad research themes. These are:
Major Infectious, HIV, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Non-communicable diseases, Diabetes, Stroke, Hypertension, Cancer, Neglected infectious diseases, Dengue, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), Schistosomiasis
The types of research are clinical trials, vaccine trials, surveillance studies, qualitative studies, experimental studies and others.
