The CHUK is a public health institution that opened in 1984. It is located in the north-west of the capital and enjoys a status of self-government, but receives state subsidies and has since hosted opening the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Burundi. It is one of four major hospitals serving the capital Bujumbura and the surrounding provinces. Without having (today) an important technical platform, it is the national reference center.
